It just ain’t the holidays if Time Inc. isn’t laying people off. But this year it looks like they’re pulling out all the stops. Ann Moore sent out a memorandum on Tuesday outlining how Time Inc. would be cutting six percent of their employees (600 people) and that the layoffs would begin in about two weeks, according to a story in The New York Times.
Time Inc.’s 24 magazines in the United States and their Web sites will be organized into three divisions: news, which will include Fortune, Money, Time and Sports Illustrated; lifestyle titles, which include Real Simple, Cottage Living, Coastal Living and Southern Living, among others; and style and entertainment, which includes People, InStyle and Entertainment Weekly, which has suffered a severe downturn and is likely to be whittled down under the new structure.
Of course, as I learned year-after-year while working at Time Inc., the people who make the really, really bad decisions always seem to keep their jobs and are often given more responsibilities.
The mainstream media continues to amaze and confuse me and I’m sure Ann Moore’s job just keeps getting more and more difficult.
