B&H Photo is now showing the Canon G9 as discontinued. The camera that every pro photog says is the best point and shoot digi in the world is getting scarce, at exactly the time I thought I’d check it out. Happens all the time.
Guess I’ll have to wait a while and see what Canon has planned that could possibly be better than this one. I’m thinking maybe it will be much discussed Canon Powershot G10, which should be announced in the next month or two.

I received a Panasonic TZ-5 for fathers day (hints were involved). I really love it. Its got great Leica glass, meters well, has modest wide angle and decent telephoto. Like most small cameras, the flash range limited but it does a nice job within its range. The burst shooting is a nice feature; taking three or four photos solves a lot of shutter lag problems, but even then the shutter lag is not bad. There’s also some focus modes you can switch into that are faster. I also like the slider switch (vs. button) on/off button. With the button you have to look to confirm you pressed it or if you pressed it twice by accident and turned it off. With the slider you just push it to the right and you know exactly what the condition is. It also has a slider under the shooting hand thumb that goes in and out of review mode which is nice. Very happy. Supposedly soon Panasonic is coming out with a version of the camera with built in bluetooth which could be a cool feature for some people.
